Rough Lumber

Rough cut lumber is lumber that has not been processed or finished at the mill. Green tree trunks are often processed with large band or table saws with the resulting boards left in their raw or rough sawn state. These boards are usually thicker than normal so they can be properly surfaced and to allow for drying so that excessive volume is not lost in the process.

A favourite among woodworkers, rough cut lumber is cheaper and often dries thicker than normal finished wood thus allowing more room for mistakes. Using rough cut lumber is an excellent means for the backyard hobbyist and craftsman to save money while acquiring quality project wood. Money saved by the manufacturer in the finishing process is passed on to the consumer. This means a little extra work for the buyer but the advantage is the craftsman can finish according to his needs. Before facing and finishing the wood, rough sawn lumber must first be dried. Drying times work out on average to one year per inch of thickness.
